In 2012, New Mexico State University’s Chile Pepper Institute named the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion the hottest pepper in 2012. It was quickly dethroned by the Carolina Reaper. The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion boasts 1.2 million to 2 million Scoville heat units (SHU) and currently ranks as the world's 3rd hottest pepper.
